Stepan Zorian

Stepan Zorian, classical writer, translator, academician, social worker, was born in Gharakilisa (present Vanadzor) to the peasant family. Because Armenian schools were closed he studied in a Russian school.

In 1908 he went to Tbilissi and worked for periodicals “Messenger” and “Labourer” as a literary worker and translator. The first story, “The Hungary” was published in the magazine “Luma” in 1909. The first selection, “Sad People” came to light in 1918. A year later Stepan Zorian moved to Yerevan and was engaged in editorial, translation and publishing activity.

He worked with “Armenian Cooperation” weekly paper and was involved in the “Armenian movie” as a literary adviser. He worked as chief editor of the Committee of Education of State Publishing Office, administrative secretary of Armenian Writers’ Union, president of Ministries Council joint literature, art and architecture state awards committee, member of chief editorship of Armenian Soviet Encyclopedia. Zorian was elected as a member of USSR writers’ Union and the USSR Writers’ I forum deputy. The writer was awarded the title of academician of Armenia"s Scientific Academy.

The fertile pen of Stepan Zorian created stories, novels, literary-scientific, critical articles and memoirs. Stepan Zorian’s heroes are isolated people with limited interests, living in the moment as if having neither past, nor future.
The first writings show the author’s ability of penetrating into the hidden corners human psychology, the deep knowledge of life and human relations.

Describing the life of his heroes the writer reveals inner contrasts of reality. The way of thinking of characters of the collection of stories entitled “The Fence” is an outcome of the environment and human relationships rather than their inner nature.

The passion for property causes discord between neighbours, corrupts the human image, the new bourgeois relations oppress the human being and throw him to the street; for their personal interests people are able even to renounce blood relations and moral principles (“House Blessing”, “The Railway”, “Hanes”, “Tsovan”). The story “The Apple Orchard” is marked with disclosing social evil.

The beginning of Zorian’s literary activity coincided with the World War I. Its tragic echoes turned into stories and formed the collection “The War”. The author points out that war penetrates into all layers of the society, into the souls of the people and causes devastations (“The Patriot”, “Vahan’s Pain”, “Ohan’s Death”, “Zaqar’s Bride”, “The Readers”, “At the Well”).
