The Architecture of Ancient Fortress Garny

In 1968 a new draft was worked out by A. Sahinian, based on the studies of N. Marr. Remnants scattered around the ruined temple, and various fragments and pieces found from other parts of the territory were very helpful.

In fact the podium was almost intact. The floor of the cella and porticoes was laid out with rectangular flags of skeleton masonry. The height of the walls was determined with absolute exactness.

All the stones of the pilaster, bases and capitals of the south-eastern and south-western sides of the cella, were well preserved.

More than one third of the stones of cella wall were missing. However, in almost all rows a considerable amount of original stones is preserved.

The initial places of the columns being unknown, their laying out and spacing were based on dimensions of the architraves. Out of 28 architraves – both intact and assembled of fragments – 26 have preserved.

Columns spacing is performed according to the principle specific for the “eustyle” type temples as described by Vitruve. Thus, the initial layout and spatial structure of the temple are fully reproduced.

The unique edifice of the antique epoch, in the lapse of 1900 years since its construction, rising from the three-hundreds-year ruins, at present stands anew in its initial grandeur.

Toros Toramanian, the well-known Armenian architect-scholar, examining the ruins of the temple wrote that the temple of Garny “is the queen of the Armenian art”.

The Armenian architecture of the antique epoch, being in close contact with architectural art of Greece, Rome and particularly neighboring Hellenistic countries (Asia Minor, Syria, Persia etc.) produced remarkable monuments peculiar to that period. However, based on rich local traditions, characteristic of Near Asia art, it had its original development.

Inheriting, developing and enriching constructional traditions of local ethnic strata of the Armenian upland, Hayasa and Urartu, the Armenian architecture also localized and elaborated such architectural forms from other countries, which harmonized with its inner features of development (climate, nature, building materials, time, spiritual culture and costumes of the people) and, undergoing gradual crystallization, pertained its deeply national features.

The process of formation of the Armenian national architecture and manifestation of its peculiar aspects had started way back in the pre-Cristian period, covering nine centuries, in fact representing the first stage of the classic Armenian architecture formation.
